2013 USHA National Collegiate Championships at Arizona State

Sean Foley  travelled to the USHA National Collegiate championships last week representing his college UCD. Sean was defeated in the early rounds of the Mens Singles in two close games. However along with fellow UCD student Martin Mulkerrins (Galway).  They competed
in the Open Doubles division, producing some of the tournament’s most exciting matches on the way to the final. While Mulkerrins’ unique skills are well known throughout the game, Foley – a relatively unknown player – drew the most comment from the crowed. His hardy performances, never giving an inch on the right hand side. They produced a string of great performances to reach the Mens Open Doubles final, none more so than their dramatic semi final win 11-10 in the tie break .After a great battle they lost out by the narrowest of margins in the final, 11-10 in the tie break to Lake Forest pair CJ Laffey and Isaac Acosta. This was a fantastic standard and the two lads can be very proud of their efforts over the week.

Sean and Martin were awarded certificates at the tournament banquet on Saturday night and were honoured as All Americans for handball. This award is of the highest standard in the US for excellence in ones chosen sport and is a fantastic acheivement for both players and Irish handball
