A Chara,

many thanks for again taking the time to read the latest exciting news in the world of GAA Handball...

Interveiw One Wall NatsThese are indeed very exciting times for GAA Handball following a hugely positive response to the first GAA Handball TV series in over 2 decades. This very exciting new venture from GAA Handball, in conjunction with TG4, began on Friday 17th December with highlights from the GAA Showdown and 2010 GAA Handball National All-Star Awards Ceremony in Croke Park.

Since that opening programme, the new handball TV series, 'The GAA Handball Show', which concludes on Monday 31st January 2011 (8.30pm-9.30pm) with a double episode, has highlighted the many terrific facets of this great GAA sport.

60x30 Senior Pres 2009From the fantastic action in the 40x20, One Wall, 60x30 Hardball and Softball Championships to the intriguing behind the scenes look at the some of the hundreds of Schools and Clubs around Ireland, it has proven to be an enlightening venture indeed.

We certainly hope that you have been tuning in to watch the GAA Handball Show unfold and that you have derived considerable enjoyment from what has been portrayed in the series to date. This concludes on Monday 31st January with an exciting double-bill and of course you can still review all episodes to date on the TG4 website - click on the link on the left of this e-zine.

Masters Players WorldsThe series has effectively provided the foundations to what we in GAA Handball hope to be an inspiring and thought-provoking build-up to the World Championships in Ireland in 2012. This event will be the largest ever Handball event in the World with record attendances set to compete and enjoy what should be a spectacular occasion  on the Emerald Isle. The GAA's proposal to have a new state-of-the-art National Handball Arena (artist's impression below) built in time for the World Championships remains a very real objective and Uachtaráin C.L.G., Christy Cooney, highlights this in his interview on The GAA Handball Show on Monday 31st January.

New Handball Centre

Overall the countdown to a sensational championship is effectively underway and GAA Handball will provide many opportunities for gaels throughout Ireland and indeed around the World to familiarise themselves with a brilliant and dynamic GAA Sport for Life!

GO HandballJanuary is in many ways the 'sleeping month' for GAA Handball nationally in Ireland, although this altered somewhat for the large contingent of ladies handballers throughout Ireland. A first GO Event (Girls Only) was organised in Castlebar and proved to be a terrific success with girls of all ages and grades taking part in an excellent social competitive occasion. Further details on this new initiative to promote our 'Women in Sport' initiatives can be found below.

Irish Junior Team 2010GAA Handball again exhibited our impressive credentials in respect of the talent at youth level in boys and girls inside the past month also. The Irish Junior Handball team travelled to San Diego in California and had a series of brilliant wins in the prestigious US Nationals. We again congratulate our many young stars of the now and the future. Further details are below.

Again I would like to stress the many terrific benefits of the game of handball to everyone. This is a sport which can be played by boys and girls, men and women, of all ages. It is a fantastic game for anyone looking to compete at club or indeed world level, yet significantly is a game which provides immense health benefits while having guaranteed fun. We have promoted this in many ways in our TV Handball series and hope you, your family and friends are ready to take up the challenge in your area too!

GAA Handball are also on facebook, which you can access by clicking on the link below and joining as a fan.

And dont forget the Official National Website - - which will continue to be developed throughout 2011, having now crossed 200,000 hits since its launch and continuing to increase with each month.

Finally, I must mention that GAA Handball take immense pride and gratification in seeing the many thousands of players, young and old, enjoying a terrific family and community game. On that note we must also pass on our sincerest sympathies to the many families and communities throughout Ireland who have been hit with overwhelming tragedies in recent times. I would like to pass on sincere sympathy to the families of Michael Murphy (Ballydesmond), Michaela McAreavy (Harte) and to all those who have lost loved ones recently. I can say that the prayers of the GAA Handball family everywhere are with you all.

Is mise le meas,
